Beware of Phishing Emails with Bogus OAMES Invoices

One of our member organizations contacted OAMES office to let us know that they were receiving bogus emails with fake invoices from OAMES.  Be aware these emails are NOT from OAMES even though they appear to be sent by Kam Yuricich, OAMES executive director.

We've learned through our IT vendor that this is a Spear Phishing campaign or email spoofing and generally speaking, can't be prevented.  Sources find emails in various industries and then spoof out a FROM address and then ADD a personal touch of making the email look legit, even with a signature that seems correct.

Make sure your anti-virus software is up to date and running when you check your email. Since many trojans and viruses exploit Windows vulnerabilities, it is also a good idea to use Windows Update to apply any needed security patches.

We are especially concerned due to the timing as we are currently going through our annual dues renewal process.  All OAMES membership renewal invoices are generated hard copy and sent by regular mail to the key contact at each of our members' offices.

If you have any questions about the status of your membership, please email info@oames.org or call the OAMES office at 614-876-2424.
