Developing A Better Understanding: Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health and Substance Use

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended lives and livelihoods for months on end, and, while progress is being made, the future remains uncertain. The impact of the pandemic and the accompanying social isolation, fear, grief, stress, and anxiety will undoubtedly have long-term mental health and substance use repercussions.

The necessary public health interventions associated with promoting health and safety in a pandemic has exacerbated mental health and substance use disorders among many with existing conditions. The pandemic has also induced general stress across the population and may lead to new mental health and substance use disorders.
